First Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in Beijing delivers produce to your door once or twice a week (depending on your preference). Memberships range from RMB 2,200-3,000 for delivery, or RMB 1,600-2,400 for pick-up orders. You can also farm your own small 30~ 60-square meter plot for RMB 1,500~ 12000 a year.
The farm also organise lessons,teaching citizens to care food and environment with effective techniques, helping them plant better in their own land.
Little Donkey Farm was established in April 2008 comprising 230 mu and situated in Beijing’s Haidian District, Sujiatuo Town, Houshajian West Village. Little Donkey Farm is collaboration between Beijing’s Haidian District’s Agriculture and Forestry Ministry, Renmin University’s School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Reconstruction Department. Part of Little Donkey’s mission is to include agriculture in the tertiary industry of culture and heritage through mobilizing not just farmers, but citizens, NGOs, and governments to join the sustainable agricultural movement. Little Donkey also seeks to use international experience to build “civic agriculture and cooperative sustainable agriculture.” Little Donkey Farm boasts a core research base, connecting rural and urban areas through affiliation with Green Ground Eco-Tech Center (Beijing), founded in 2003, formerly known as the Institute of Rural Reconstruction. Green Ground Eco-Tech Center has extensive experience in urban and rural ecological agriculture. These innovative and integrated explorations continue today through Green Ground Eco-Center founded in 2006.
Three years later, Little Donkey Farm continues this ecological tradition through an ecological planting pattern and establishment of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). This citizen’s farm management model has been met with overwhelming support from Beijing residents, totaling approximately 700 members Through Little Donkey Farm’s CSA business model and ecological agriculture practices, our farm adheres to the concept of sustainable living. Thus far, our farm’s successes have been recounted in news agencies both at home and abroad, including, but not limited to Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, People’s Daily, Beijing TV and over 120 other media outlets.
Ecological agriculture is a pressing concern worldwide and is causing people across the globe to increase their awareness on issues surrounding food importance and sustainable livelihoods. The development of eco-agriculture and ecologically constructed communities provide valuable starting points of reference for grappling with these issues.
Currently, Little Donkey Farm utilizes organic production and marketing techniques through research and development to support ongoing environmental protection. Our farm also acts as a place for community involvement through visits or public land rentals, ecological agriculture demonstrations, training and education, technology research and development, as well as theoretical research and policy advocacy to continue the exploration of rural and urban China’s road to sustainable development.
